Platypus Graphics profits up 25% after year of packaging growth

The Brisbane printer’s annual report for the 12 months ending 30 June 2010 showed revenues of $18.9m, up 3% on the year before.

Platypus has noted sustained growth in its packaging operations over the past three years, attributing the success to new machinery and client wins.

Around a year ago, the 80-staff company had to find floorspace at its plant in the suburb of Stafford for Australia’s second KBA Rapida 106, a Bobst Expertcut 106 diecutter and a GMC-TC2 twin-knife board sheeter.

Managing director Tom Lusch said he was pleased with the results, and added the company was forecasting a 15% increase in future turnover.

“We are still doing it tough like everybody else, but this is definitely a positive sign,” he said.

“Packaging is where we see have seen our most growth; expanding our operation and putting in place the new equipment has definitely helped.

“When a buyer approaches the first thing they want to know is how much capacity you have and we have done our best to increase capacity.”

Lusch added that the recent floods had affected business after some of his clients were hit by the natural disaster.
