Amcor awards $110m paper mill contract to Leighton

Leighton will design and construct the paper machine building, stock preparation building, product store waste paper yard, mill offices, control room and other ancillary works at the Botany plant. The contractor has previously worked on Amcor’s Gawler plant in South Australia.

The Botany B9 paper mill will generate recycled paper from waste collected throughout the Sydney area.

Peter Handel, executive general manager of Leighton Contractors’ Industrial & Energy Division, said: “The new Botany Paper Mill represents the future of environmentally sustainable paper manufacturing worldwide.”

The upgrade to the Botany site, which commenced last May, is part of a consolidation of Amcor’s paper-making operations onto a single site. The company will be closing its site in the Melbourne suburb of Fairfield upon the project’s completion. The plan was first announced in 2008.

The project has received a financial assistance package from the NSW government.
