APN to close QLD sites and cut 25 staff

Mackay will close in July and Bundaberg will shut in September. Production of the Daily Mercury, the News-Mail and a number of other publications will be moved to APN’s print site in Yandina (pictured) on the Sunshine Coast.

A company spokesperson told ProPrint it had excess capacity at the two sites, which have a total of 40 staff.

APN said it would move around 15 employees to new roles at the Yandina site, and that publications will not be affected.

Martin Simons, chief executive of group publishing for APN, pointed to the “changing state of news” and said staff would be adequately compensated.

“Our main focus is minimising the impact on employees,” he said.

“This includes securing alternative sources of employment within APN where possible and providing the necessary support services.”

“The company acknowledges and thanks our print teams for their hard work and commitment over many years.”

In Yandina, APN operates a Manroland 4/1 Regioman for coldset printing as well as a 2/2 Uniset heatset tower. Ithas Krause LS-jet 250 platesetters and Muller Martini inserters, which both have tabloid and quarterfold stitching capabilities.
