APP responds to last week’s Greenpeace ambush

Greenpeace protestors dressed as orangutans approached stakeholders and customers of APP affiliate Solaris in Sydney last week condemning the company's deforestation in Indonesia.

APP told ProPrint that Greenpeace relies on "false and misleading statements, data and maps to support its claims' and its approach to sustainable forest certification in that region is uninformed".

APP argued that Indonesia's forestry certification, LEI, was as credible as FSC and allowed emerging markets to compete more fairly.

"What people need to understand is there are equally credible certification schemes, including PEFC on an international level and LEI in Indonesia on a national level," said the company.

"At the same time, groups like PEFC and LEI, provide a level playing field for emerging markets to have the opportunity to compete fairly."

According to the paper giant: "If you want to promote higher prices at the checkout line and you want to limit consumer choice, then you mandate a certification scheme like FSC."

"What you get from that is effectively blocking imports from emerging countries likes Indonesia that have the ability to more efficiently produce pulp and paper in a sustainable and responsible way."
