Australia Post gets into the Olympic spirit

The new stamp issue features three stamps, two of which commemorate the Athens Olympic Games (August 13-29) and another that marks the Paralympic Games (September 17-28).

The stamps celebrate competition at the highest international level with colourful stylised illustrations of athletes in three sports common to the Olympic and Paralympic Games – Swimming, Athletics and Cycling (Paralymics).

In addition, Australia Post will follow up with its successful gold medal commemorative series in 2000, recognising Australia’s 2004 Olympic gold medallists with 50c stamps featuring the images of Australia’s gold medal moments from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

The stamp sheetlets are expected to be available in metropolitan Australia Post outlets within 48 hours of Australian gold medal presentations in Athens, thanks to a special design and technology team with experience from the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Amber McDougall, Australia Post Philatelic group manager, says, “The Australian Gold Medallists Stamps provide an opportunity for all Australians to share in the success of our Olympic athletes.

“And with the Games in Athens in 2004, it’s a way to bring a little piece of the Olympics back home to add to their collection.”
