John Billet from Foot & Playsted in Launceston has received the Tasmanian Apprentice of the Year Award at a ceremony in Hobart.
Of the five apprentices interviewed by judges for the award, which is sponsored by Media Super, Billet stood out and took home the $1,000 Heidelberg cheque, together with some high praise. Judges included Joan Grace, Victoria and Tasmania state manager of PIAA, and Craig Pearce, managing director at Flying Colours Printing Grace says, “John is an apprentice who has made considerable progress since completing his apprenticeship, and someone who we are confident will make a contribution to the industry for many years to come. “Each of the apprentices nominated were of a high calibre and a reflection of the high standards held by the printing industry in Tasmania. We were blown away by the quality of the work they presented, and the depth of knowledge and passion displayed by all the nominees.” First-time judge Pearce adds that while each of the apprentices displayed professionalism, commitment and enthusiasm, Billet’s industry knowledge made him a standout. He says, “John confidently illustrated his motivation to become a major contributor to the company he works for, and he acknowledged them for their commitment to his training. John is a young man with massive potential which, in one way, made the selection process a little easier.” Grace adds that it is vital to recognise and encourage the young people who will continue to drive the print industry in Tasmania.
