More relevant to the commercial print market are the iR C5870 and iR C6870 imageRUNNERs, designed for larger workgroups with high-end needs. These devices offer black and white printing at 58ppm or 68ppm respectively along with entirely controllable full colour printing, scanning and sending whenever a user requires it.
With these devices, managers are able to tightly control the cost of printing as they are priced at a point more typically associated with the cost of black and white only hardware, rather than the higher-priced dedicated colour MFDs — and now very affordable ’per click’ colour print charging will only apply for those pages that are actually delivered in colour.
Colour usage can be controlled through password-protected access to colour printing as well as several clever swipe card options so that only employees with specific permission can use the smart colour capability.

The iR C5870 and iR C6870 imageRUNNERs ship standard with MEAP (Multifunctional Embedded Application Platform), a world-first Canon Java-based technology that allows end-users, third-party software developers, system integrators and Canon itself to place software inside an imageRUNNER device to modify and enhance its behaviour.
For example, MEAP solutions are available that enhance print and fax security, help organisations to scan documents directly in enterprise software systems, and perform many other functions.
Access to each device can be password-protected and Secure Print and Personal Mailbox functions ensure that once sent to print only authorised personnel can print out confidential documents.
In addition, the devices also offer barcode printing which provides an easy and highly accurate means of data entry and storage for computerised information management systems.
To minimise the risk of unauthorised access to confidential information or data, the hard disk can be encrypted and deleted on a pre-scheduled basis.
