Canon ‘pouring funds’ into print R+D

Canon has officially opened its new national print production showroom with staff told production print is one of Canon’s fastest growing markets, and is now receiving a disproportionate amount of the company’s enormous R+D spend.

Canon Australia had flown in Oce president and chief executive Anton Schaaf to perform the opening ceremony, and Schaaf claims Canon is number one on the printing market, and that production printing was now had the largest R&D spend proportionate to sales of any Canon division.

“Some say print is dead, that is way off the mark. Canon sees many growth opportunities and multiple new applications opening up, and we are investing heavily for the future,” he says.

The new showroom opening represents the culmination of what is effectively a relaunch by Canon Professional Print, which now has around 200 staff in the division and a host of new solutions.

These include the newly launched Canon C800 digital colour production printer and the new Arizona 6100 series industrial scale wide format printer.

Much of Canon’s product portfolio is on display at the Ryde showroom, in addition to the C800 and an Arizona there are imagePrograf printers, monochrome digital cutsheet solutions, as well as office and enterprise printers, and some new Canon solutions such as security systems.

Cutting the ribbon with Anton Schaaf were Canon Australia managing director Taz Nakamasu, and Canon Production Print senior general manager Mike Boyle.
