This year’s hotly contested Queensland Printing Industries Craftsmanship Awards (PICA) saw digital print group Colour Chiefs collect the most medals with seven out of ten category awards striking gold.
The Brisbane printer scored three gold gongs in the design categories for illustrations, print/digital campaigns and for packaging and labelling, and in print it dominated the categories with four gold in packaging, commercial posters, digital and speciality printing.
ProPrint spoke to Colour Chiefs co-owner John Woolrych who says the awards are a powerful testament to the print work of his business, and printers across the Queensland industry.
“The night was well attended, and it is always nice to see all the Queensland printers and suppliers gather like this,” says Woolrych.
“We have done well in the awards the past two years after not competing for some time. The Colour Chiefs team are proud to win gold and happy to see our work being recognised.”
Platypus Graphics came close behind Colour Chiefs at the awards this year with six category medals, three of them gold for embellishment, books and booklets, catalogues, magazines and brochures.
The 2016 Industry Legend awards were given to KW Doggett boss Ken Doggett and Spot Production director Peter Carmody. Susan Heaney also collected an industry award for her work with Women in Print.

The night was held at the Pullman Hotel in Brisbane, attended by the biggest names in Queensland print and organised by the Printing Industries Association of Australia.
All the gold winners from the PICAs will now be in the running for the annual National Print Awards held next year.
The Western Australian Printing Industries Craftsmanship Awards is also slated for this weekend, November 12 at the The Rendezvous Hotel in Scarborough.
