Digital gaining ground in news consumption

The latest data on news media consumption from Enhanced Media Metrics Australia (emma) has found 13.3 million Australians or 73 per cent of the population use digital devices for news media.

Industry body NewsMediaWorks reports that consumers accessing news, information and entertainment journalism on smartphones, tablets and laptops/PCs continue to grow each month.

However digital popularity still trails behind print newspapers which were read by 75 per cent of Australians in July, meaning print has just a two per cent market lead over digital.

NewsMediaWorks CEO Mark Hollands says a large number of consumers continue to engage with print, which demonstrates the quality, influential journalism contained in newspapers.

He adds, “Newspapers remain a powerful medium for reaching high-value consumers. Those who read three or more copies of a newspaper per week earn an average of 20 per cent more than those who do not read print newspapers.”

According to the emma data for the 12 months to July 2016, The Sydney Morning Herald is Australia’s most read title across all platforms with 6.35 million readers.

The Daily Telegraph and the Herald Sun followed, reaching 4.52 and 4.14 million readers respectively.
