Fairfax to close SA commercial printer

Fairfax will close a commercial printing business in Bordertown as part of a proposal to downsize its regional newspaper operations in South Australia.

A company spokesman says the printer, which does not have a trading name, has a very old Heidelberg Kord single-colour sheetfed offset press that badly needs replacing.

The printer has only two major clients and produces basic flyers, posters, newsletters, invoice books, and stationery.

One full time employee would be affected but it is not determined if they would be transferred or made redundant.

The business was founded in 1908 and acquired by Fairfax in October 2010.

The proposal also involves closing the free weekly Roxby Downs Sun, cutting the Whyalla News from twice weekly to weekly, and shedding 35 jobs across the state.

The spokesman says it is due to be decided on in the next couple of weeks.
