Fuji Xerox achieves zero landfill with new recycling plant

The facility will receive products from nine Fuji Xerox companies across the Asia Pacific region including Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand. Fuji Xerox says it has been successfully running a state of the environmental art recycling plant in Japan for the last two years, and the new facility in Thailand replicates the Japanese site.

Ramsay Moodie, director corporate affairs at Fuji Xerox Australia says, “Subject to an in-depth review by the Australia and Thai governments, the proposal looks to be a landmark initiative in the recycling arena that has been welcomed by all. This puts us at the forefront of the product stewardship movement in Australia” Under the program, the Fuji Xerox Group will, each year, recycle some 20,000-30,000 items of equipment and up to 500,000 supplies cartridges.

Until now, Fuji Xerox Australia has been recycling end of life copiers and printers in Australia. Ramsay Moodie says, “Our Australian recycling partners have done an excellent job achieving a recycling ratio of about 85 per cent for Fuji Xerox Australia, however the remaining 15 per cent was being sent to landfill. Our global objective is to achieve zero landfill and we can now accomplish this as our Thai operation progressively ramps up its operation.”

The new facility will allow the Fuji Xerox Australia Eco Manufacturing facility in Zetland to concentrate on high tech remanufacturing for the region. Dr Dan Godamunne, the general manager of the Fuji Xerox Australia Eco Manufacturing Centre says, “We have already established a great track record in the region on the export of remanufactured fuser rollers and laser print engines, achieving exports of some five million dollars in the last year. We are now able to expand our efforts on high tech components for the Japanese and other regional markets.”

TheThai plant operates from a 10,000 square metre, purpose-built facility in the Chonburi Industrial Estate and currently employs 100 people.
