Alastair Hadley, general manager sales marketing and product management, says Heidelberg worked closely with Annette Cook, RMIT’s program co-ordinator for graphic design, and teacher Dale Nason, on the project which was incorporated into the curriculum of the Cert IV Design course and commissioned by Heidelberg to give the students a learning experience.
Hadley says, “Heidelberg has had a long association with RMIT and we were pleased when Annette and Dale came on board to work with us on this mural concept. The students have really come up with some creative executions that have transformed what was a dull construction fence into an original artwork.”
Melanie Dooley, manager marketing services, Heidelberg says, “We gave the students at RMIT the opportunity to gain some valuable learning experience. We commissioned the construction and installation. “
Nason said the project dovetailed perfectly into RMIT’s philosophy of providing students with authentic tasks. Students were required to handle all aspects from taking the brief from the client to presenting the final concepts, sourcing suppliers and managing production, working within the strict branding guidelines for Heidelberg.
Two of the students that worked on the project, Persephone Thacker and Jarryd Hood, were amongst the attendees, Thacker’s graphic of an underwater seascape features prominently in the mural, she says, “It is fantastic to see it finished, I didn’t anticipate that it would be this big, and it turned out well, I’m so impressed with it.”
Hood says, “I came up with about twenty different pieces. We had that much work to choose from that it was not hard in the end to come up with a good result. “ He says the best experience was presenting the designs to Alastair Hadley, Melanie Dooley and Diandra Gavilluci of Heidelberg.
