Jaypak demonstrates $3.5m of new kit after landing major account

The Perth-based firm held an open house on 29 November to demonstrate the Bobst folder-gluer it installed in June and the six-colour KBA Rapida 106 with double coater installed in August.

General manager Jayden Fraurud told ProPrint that Jaypak had invested $3.5 million on the machines.

It came after Jaypak won a folding carton contract for a large frozen food manufacturer in December 2011 that boosted revenue by 30%, he added.

“It’s a big investment. We needed higher efficiencies and to reduce our cost base. The sheer volume justified purchasing the new [KBA] press.”

Jaypak now requires only one pass to print in six colours, seal and then add a UV coat. It previously had to print and then transfer the job to a much slower UV machine, he said.

Fraurud told ProPrint that after a “very big year” in 2012, the 35-staff operation planned to consolidate in 2013 with the focus on bedding-down the new machinery rather than chasing new accounts.

The open house featured a live demonstration of both machines running at full speed, said Fraurud.

It also doubled as a celebration of Jaypak’s 30-year anniversary and an opportunity for the family business to thank its customers and suppliers, he said.
