Josef Schneider, father of DicoWeb to retire

Schneider’s achievements regarding inventions and developments for the DICO (Digital ChangeOver) process and products like DICO Offset and DICO Gravure plus implementation in the form of the DICOweb, the first digital offset press, represent important structural innovations in the printing industry.

The DICOweb, introduced at drupa 2000 and the winner of several design and technology awards, is the only offset printing system that features in-press imaging and de-imaging and therefore requires no printing plates. The image data is transferred directly to the press and job change-over in all printing units takes only twelve minutes. Georg Riescher will manage the DICOweb activities in the future. He is the managing director of MAN Roland’s Plauen facilities.

Schneider (58) is a physicist who joined MAN Roland in 1988 and from 1993 onwards headed up the Digital Printing Systems Business Unit. Before joining MAN Roland, he managed Innovation Research at the FOGRA institute in Munich. He has also been a guest professor lecturing on innovation technology at the Wuppertal Polytechnic College, at the Institute for Printing Technology and Planning which is affiliated with the Academy of Arts in Berlin, and at the Moscow State University for Printing where he was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2003.

His doctorate thesis in 1981 already received the Research Award from the German Photographic Society. In 2000 he won first prize worth €20000 in the Berthold-Leibinger Innovation Awards for his work, “Laser and digitally convertible printing systems” in recognition of outstanding research for applied laser physics in the field of production technology.

In 2005, Schneider received the Johann Gutenberg Prize from the Society for Information Display (SID) and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) for his many innovative contributions to the application of computer-aided printing systems for conventional and electronic printing processes.
