Magazine sales buck trend beating online

The enhanced media metrics (Emma) total media and magazine audience report for June 2016 to May 2017 shows the majority of popular printed magazines earning more sales in the past year per month than their online counterpart.

The Australian New Idea magazine came on top with 2.7 million sales a month compared to 277,000 online monthly views. Better Homes and Gardens coming a close second in sales with 2.3 million physical copies sold to the 115,000 monthly online views.

The only magazine to fall short to its digital category was taste.com.au which only got 763,000 month print readers in comparison to 3.2 million monthly hits online.

Some newspapers were also earning more physical sales than online clicks with the Courier-Mail, Daily Telegraph, Financial Review, Herald Sun, Sunday Times, The Australian, The Mercury, Geelong Advertiser and The West Australian all trumping their online selves.

The West Australian doubled its online readership with 1.2 million copies sold a month compared to 778,000 monthly online clicks.

The Age and Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) online sites won over its print partner with The Age receiving 2.1 million hits a month compares to 1.4 million print copies sold. SMH online site getting 3.8 million hits compared to the 2 million copies sold a month.

Over the past year magazines have taken a major hit with iconic teenage magazine, Dolly folding after 46 years due to receding readership numbers. Its competitor Girlfriend magazine went digital still keeping a print component but cutting its publications dates down from monthly to quarterly.

Only last year magazine publisher Bauer CEO Nick Chan warned his staff underperforming magazines will get the flick with a company wide reshuffle.

Last week, offset web giant IVE grabbed the Pacific Magazines contract off rival PMP, a major move in the offset world.
