Matte Gold acquires Kelly’s Gang to increase capacity

Victoria-based embellishment business Matte Gold has acquired the entire entity of Kelly’s Gang, giving the company a platform to increase its capacity and to diversify.

Being in the business of embellishment, Matte Gold specialises in letterpress, foil stamping, embossing, forme cutting, holographics and highly secure hologram foils.

Matte Gold directors Matt and Nikki Murcott took to LinkedIn to announce the acquisition saying, “We have this month purchased ‘an iconic print establishment’ in the form of Kelly’s Gang.”

Sprinter spoke to Matt Murcott, who said, “As a company, we had been looking around for quite a while for options to increase our capacity and diversify.

“Initially investigating the digital and vinyl applications market, we found this wasn’t quite the right fit for us. Ultimately, our focus was always going to be on what we know and what we could bring in-house, similar to our current processes.”

Kelly’s Gang was started by John Kelly about 25 years ago and it has grown from a one press business to employing multiple staff, acquiring another small pad and foil printing company in its time.

Murcott confirmed that Kelly will be staying on with the business for a few months while the business transitions over to Matte Gold.

“John and I have had a business relationship for over 20 years. His business model already consisted of similar embellishment processes and employs staff that would cross over into Matte Gold seamlessly as they already have the knowledge of foil stamping but bring new skills to the business in the shape of pad and screen,” he said.

“John has been a great friend and mentor to us over the years and will be staying on for a little while during the transition before taking a well-earned break.”

Matte Gold is currently in the process of transferring all of Kelly’s Gang’s stock, jobs and machinery into its new facility in Carrum Downs.

“What this means for us and our clients is that the products that may have been split between our two companies for production can now be completed in-house here in Carrum Downs,” Murcott said.

“It also gives our respective clientele much greater options for additional product development within our team. As part of our sale agreement, John will be staying on as a team member for at least six months.”
