The Victorian company headed the medal tally with
golds in the books, catalogues and magazines bound by any method but saddle stitching category, and the digital printing non-inkjet category. It then won the Heidelberg Excellence in Craft Award and
the Fuji Xerox Effectiveness Award. McKellar Renown only began digital printing as year ago.
Receiving the four awards were two of the
grandchildren of the company founder, with Chris Norgate, general manager of
the company and his sister Kerrie Norgate, account director taking the stage.
Chris Norgate gained the biggest cheer of the night when he told the
assembled guests in his victory speech that as far Gen X and Y were concerned ‘print is relevant, engaging and rad’.
Topping the gold medal list with three apiece were Offset
Alpine, Platypus Graphics and Geon Perth, although the latter, now renamed
Advance Press, perhaps wisely stayed away from the Crown Casino.
In addition to McKellar Renown two printers won a pair
of golds, including Adams Print and RA Printing. Those taking home a gold
included AFI Branding VIC, Avon Graphics NSW, Bambra Press VIC, Bright Print
Group NSW, Detmold Consumer Goods Packaging VIC, Evolve Printing NSW, Flying
Colours Printing TAS, Impact International NSW, Labelworld WA, Momento Pro NSW,
Pandora’s Boxes VIC, Picpress VIC, PMP Print VIC, Pure Colours Digital Printing
NSW, Rural Press Mandurah WA, Scott Print WA and Vega Press VIC.
Once the category awards were complete, the chairman
of judges Rod Urquhart presented the Judges Award for Excellence, arguably the
night’s most sought-after honour. This year, it was awarded to Bambra Press for
the ‘Napoleon – Revolution to Empire’ book produced for the National Gallery of
Victoria. The book was designed by the client and printed by Bambra Press on
Hanno Gloss from KW Doggett Fine Paper.
The Bindery finished the job and Avon Graphics handled the
embellishment.
The Media Super Future Leader Award went to South Australian
apprentice Jasmine Weinmann from Griffin Press. She has spent most of her
career in the print industry, from making plates after school for a local
newspaper, to an apprenticeship in graphic pre-press, to her current role with
Griffin Press, where she is adding a bindery and print finishing apprenticeship
to her qualifications.
The Fuji Xerox Effectiveness Award went to the Central
Park Agent Book, produced by McKellar Renown, Victoria. Produced for Central
Park, Cheltenham, this book was designed by Studio Worldwide. Once again,
McKellar Renown did the prepress and printing, this time on Advocate from BJ
Ball Paper and Splendorgel from Spicers. EH Stationers helped McKellar Renown
with the finishing.
The Currie Group Award was won by Picpress, Victoria,
for their entry ‘Expressions of our Centenary Children’, which earlier in the
night took out the Gold in Category 14, for ‘Book Printing – Digital
Printing’. Client James Chetarti
Photography designed the job, which was printed by PicPress on Flexbind 230gsm
from Holmberg.
The coveted Heidelberg Australia Award for Excellence
in Craft was awarded to McKellar Renown Press, Victoria, for the Oracle
Residential booklet which won Gold in Category 6, for ‘Booklets, Catalogues and
Magazines bound by any method but Saddle Stitching’. The job was designed by
Caramel Creative for Oracle Residential and McKellar Renown did the prepress
before printing on Expression Super Smooth Radiance from Spicers and Neenah
Classic Smooth Solar White from KW Doggett Fine Paper. The job was finished by
EH Stationery and The Bindery and Avon Graphics handled the embellishment.
As a final gesture, Wanless made a special
presentation, recognising the outstanding contribution of Rod Urquhart who
steps down this year after 11 years as chairman of judges for the National
Print Awards.
