M&M Binding & Finishing moves into the future

The move is a key element in a programme of sweeping changes, which has seen the installation of a range of new equipment and the appointment of key staff including general manager, Alex Donaldson.

The new location, a stone’s throw from the major East-West arterial, enables easy access to the East and South-East, long a popular home for the city’s printers, as well as to the Airport, the Westgate Bridge and the Ring Road, linking to the city’s North and West. With the company’s new city-wide daily pick-up and delivery service, it means improved service and delivery times for customers.

The spacious new premises also bring M&M’s entire plant under one roof, offering significant productivity benefits. Workflow has been designed to world’s best standard, with jobs moving in a logical progression from receipt bay to delivery dock, without having to back track.

As well as these efficiencies, the company is promising enhanced quality and added flexibility with the installation of two brand new Kolbus binding lines which join a fleet of machines including a new Heidelberg Stitchmaster ST 400 saddle stitching line, two new Heidelberg Stahlfolder TH-KH folders and the latest Polar computer-controlled guillotine, all of which have been installed in the past 12 months.

These new Kolbus machines – the highly productive Publica 8000 cph perfect binding line and a high-volume Compact 60 hardcover line – are set to enhance M&M’s already legendary quality as well as extending its flexibility.

The computer controlled Publica is fast to makeready using computer presetting technology which guarantees prompt turnaround and extraordinary flexibility for the production of magazines, catalogues, softcover products and book blocks.

The high-volume Compact 60 handles a wide range of perfect bound, thread sealed and sewn book blocks. They are complemented by a Kolbus ‘Casemaker’ hardcase production line, as well as a gold blocking and embossing machine.

Equipment is only part of the equation and Donaldson says the company is delighted that all its key staff members have relocated to Port Melbourne to ensure customers continue to enjoy the benefit of their expertise and experience, thereby guaranteeing the unparalleled quality which is the hallmark of M&M.

“Keeping pace with world standards is critical,” he says, “and this efficient new plant and latest technology is designed to ensure we do just that, while a range of new initiatives will ensure our customers continue to enjoy legendary M&M quality delivered with even higher standards of service.

“We are proud of the reputation M&M has earned within the Australian market over nearly 40 years of progressive and reliable service. It is our mission to build on that reputation by continuously updating plant, ensuring our staff remains abreast of the latest advances and technology, and continuing to improve our customer service.”
