New truck safety laws hit NSW printing companies

Employers in NSW using freight contractors or receiving deliveries (including equipment) on vehicles over 4.5 tonnes gross will be affected. Liability will be extended beyond truck owners and drivers through to management employees of any company in the supply chain – including customers.

Printing Industries national director, employee relations, Greg Parkes, says this means if a company places unreasonable demands on a delivery, or was sending out goods on a truck which was involved in an accident, all directors or managers involved in the supply chain could face prosecution.

“Our seminars will examine the implications of the Road Transport (General) Act 2005 and the Occupational Health and Safety Amendment (Long Distance Driver Fatigue) Regulation 2005 (NSW) on the printing industry,” says Parkes. “The legislation extends liability for breaches of these requirements from drivers and transport company operators to consignors, consignees, packers, loaders and owners.”

Printing Industries employee relations officer, Charles Watson will be a guest speaker at the seminars, held at the Auburn office on August 24 7.30am to 9am and September 14 5.30pm to 7pm.
