Nulab wins 8 US awards

Melbourne based digital printer Nulab Group has received eight awards, including the best of digital printing at the recent American Premier Print Awards.

These awards were given to Nulab Group for its Nuovo album by Joshua Holko.

The American Premier Print Awards goes to those firms who demonstrate an ability to create visual masterpieces. Chosen from thousands of entries, each represents the partnership between designer and printer, need and creativity, technology and craft.

Michael Warshall, executive director at Nulab Group says, “After working hard over the last two years with physicists and colour scientists at HP Indigo in Israel, developing new algorithms and ink just for us, I felt we finally achieved true photographic results with our Indigo Presses.

“We ended up getting eight awards including the Benny with virtually 90 per cent of the items Indigo and photo albums. The staff feel good as they have worked hard. It is terrific to be recognised in Australia but in America there was 2200 entries around the world.”

Warshall says when looking for the best product to present he has three key components.

“I look for exciting imagery, impeccable printing and perfectly bound. We are lucky our customers are professional photographers. All the stuff we printed was with seven inks, most printer use CMYK, maybe some use five or six inks but not seven. What enabled us to achieve the result was the ink HP made for me, which was a photographic continuous time print,” he says.

Warshall says when talking about his idea for his ink he had to speak to the physicist at HP.

“When I was discussing things with Indigo no one knew what I was talking about as they are commercial printers. When I met with ink technicians in Israel last year they told me to talk to the physicist, they said no one has described this type of ink to them but know what I am talking about.”

Warshall says, “It has been a challenging couple of years getting it to work, the higher end albums have been going offshore and if you want to support the industry you have to print in Australia.”

Nulab Group won five awards at this years National Print Awards including Judges Award. Warshall plans to enter this year’s PICAs.
