Océ provides helping hand in print to RMIT students

The students, completing a two-year Diploma of Graphic Design at RMIT’s School of Design, prepared their work, which will be judged by representatives of Melbourne’s leading design and advertising professionals at an end-of-year function.

Meredith Chesney, RMIT graphics training educator, who accompanied the students to the Océ facility, says it is crucial to the students that the highest standards of digital printing are used to print their design portfolios.

She says, “This opportunity, provided by Océ, enabled the students to create and design the final art and then make sure it was printed the way they wanted it, completing the cycle. The students found it a terrific experience and, equally importantly, they were encouraged to work together in developing the work, which reinforced the teamwork ethic they will find in the workplace.”

Andrew Cocker of Océ, who helped coordinate the joint effort, says students were introduced to both black and white and colour equipment to familiarise them with the type of equipment they will be using in their future work.

Cocker says, “These are the graphic arts professionals of the future so it’s important they obtain some hands-on experience with state-of-the-art digital printing systems and have the chance to ask questions about colour imaging and output. We also introduced them to the wide range of Océ papers and substrates, allowing them to choose the stocks best suited to their designs.”

Océ has been closely cooperating with the RMIT School of Design for several years and earlier this year contributed an Océ colour printing system, the Océ CPS900, to the school for use in the Graphic Design course.
