OSS Digital produces ‘biggest job ever’ for David Jones 175th anniversary

The Sydney firm helped David Jones celebrate its 175th anniversary by installing enormous banners for a high-profile exhibition, said marketing manager Melissa Fuller.

"This event for us is probably the biggest deal we've ever had. We won the David Jones tender a few years ago [2010] and we do all their work," she told ProPrint.

"We had to drape 32 double-sided fabric banners that were about 14-15 metres tall, we had to hang them, we had to make our own scaffolding to hang the prints. We did a large array of foam-core graphics – we mounted the stuff, we framed it and we did the installation of the whole exhibition."

The banners were printed on an HP Designjet L65500 and installed on 16-24 May in David Jones' Sydney CBD store, she said.

"It wasn't so much of a challenge getting the quality, but the time we had to do it, and balancing the really high quality with delivering on time," she said.

OSS Digital also recently won the 'Retail POS' category at the HP Print Excellence Awards for the Asia-Pacific.

The gold medal job was a Marc Jacobs Fragrances installation at Auckland Airport in 2012, which OSS Digital designed and produced, said Fuller.

The 40-staff operation then followed up with another Marc Jacobs campaign in March 2013 for a "high-profile" part of the airport, she said.

"We built the counters and false flooring and the bulkheads and we did all the graphics. It was a really bright and fun-looking space. We printed on to leather and upholstered seats out of the leather. We made some fun spinning butterflies that the kids could spin around."

Fuller said OSS Digital had made a strategic decision 12 months ago to become an end-to-end supplier by hiring graphic designers, art directors, interior designers, industrial designers and installation staff, she said.

"We decided to offer our clients a gap-filler and what it does is save a lot of time and increase accuracy. We're not waiting on third party artwork or feedback from install teams. We've got full control of the project from start to finish," she said.

OSS Digital also works for Christian Dior Couture, Billabong, Seiko, Blackmores and the Nuance Group, she said.
