Outstanding label printers recognised at Latma awards

The 13 gold winners were chosen from around 90 entrants from label printers throughout Australia and were announced during a presentation dinner at the 2009 Latma conference at the Sofitel Mansion last week. Insignia was awarded best in show for its entry in the Flexography – colour process category.

Peter Petran, Victorian president for Latma said the 2009 awards had a record number of entries adding that this year’s entries also displayed a step up in quality.

He said, “The quality was excellent in most categories and the winners here have the opportunity to be recognised as the best in the world and I will be proud to take them to the upcoming World Label Awards.”

Petran continues, “The world label awards are seen around the world as the pinnacle of label and tag manufacturing. I am proud to say that when the World Label Awards are run each year it’s nice to see that the winners of Latma awards are held in high regard.”

For labels in the various printing process categories judging criteria includes:

  • Function (appeal and purpose)
  • Printing (registration, image sharpness/print quality, degree of difficulty, smoothness of vignette/ halftone if screen/tone)
  • Secondary Converting (laminating, die cutting, embossing, hot stamping)
  • Nonprinting Process
  • Production (converting complexity)

As well as best in show the Latma award judges also presented an innovator award in order to recognise new technology or product development, which is a significant breakthrough in the label industry. This year’s innovation award went to Collotype Labels for its Drink’n’stick wine label, which includes stickers for accessorising a saucy pin-up girl on the label.
