Postage price increases hit industry

After receiving the go-ahead from the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) last month, Australian Post has this week introduced an increase of the BPR by 5c, from 55c to 60c.

Philip Andersen, CEO of Printing Industries told Australia Printer the increase is counter-productive as it will encourage businesses to spend more marketing dollars on mediums other than print.

He says, “It’s fairly clear Australia Post doesn’t understand that these days there are alternative means to spread a message and this move is just hastening the move to electronic communication.

“Even if marketing budgets for print don’t drop they are unlikely to grow, which means less print and less work for our industry because the mailing prices have increased.”

In order to compete with the push towards electronic communication, Andersen encouraged printers to seek out digital applications that incorporate avenues that can lead back to print.
