Print management companies tackled by JPE in heated debate

Education Night, choosing to tackle an issue that has been hot on the lips of many printers in the industry, that of print management companies.

However, instead of debating the virtues and curses of such companies, JPE sought to present how two print procurement companies choose a supplier. While this may have been the case, the topic still managed to ruffle a few feathers, and heated discussions took place throughout the night as to the role print management companies should have in the industry.

The first presentation, and perhaps the more controversial of the two, was brought forth by e2e Management director Michael Wallace. While he was quick to admit that “there are many print management companies out there that are doing the industry a great disservice”, he defended the idea in principle saying that he is “out there to work with the printers, not to screw them”.
“Print management companies are winning these contracts and promise certain volumes to the suppliers. They may provide the volumes but only after the margin has been significantly squeezed down,” says Wallace.

“I feel that the printing industry is losing control of the industry and the print management companies are beginning to gain control. You can either let them continue to take control or get up and take control back.”

The second speaker was Cyberlynx procurement services manager Brian Morrsion, who gave an in-depth presentation on the rigorous selection process his company undertakes in choosing its suppliers, emphasising that loyalty and quality will always come before pricing.

According to JPE president Paul Bartolo, the night was well received, with 74 attendees making the journey to Artarmon Inn, a figure that greatly encouraged him.
