Qld co 30% more efficient with plate refresh

Queensland’s Award Bundall Printing is achieving 30 per cent more efficiency in its offset output after refreshing its platesetter system and workflow with a new Agfa thermal, no chemistry system, sourced from G2 Solutions.

Frustrated with its former violet-based CTP system breaking down and costing time and money, managing director Marty Spink met with the technology distributor to work out a better way forward.

Spink says: “It was costing a fair bit to run because it was old school technology and it was using chemicals that we no longer need. The new technology is more cost effective and better for the environment.”

The Gold Coast outfit chose a new Agfa Avalon N4 Thermal CTP device, outputting Azura plates. Moving away from chemistry, says Spink, will save the company in power, water and operator time.

“The Agfa system fitted with what we were looking for, and the Azura plates last longer; you get more runs out of them and they are more cost effective," he says.

The mainly-offset printer also went for a Xitron Navigator Workflow System to drive the new CTP and the company’s Epson 4880 printer for proofing – proofs are now generated directly from the front end rip.

G2 says the Navigator workflow, working in tandem with the Global Graphics

Harlequin Interpreter rip, irons out problems with processing Adobe Creative Suite and Cloud files.

Spink says: “G2 gave us a demonstration on the Harlequin rip and workflow. It suited our needs, so we went for it."

“Compared to our previous setup, this system is probably 30 per cent more efficient. The output quality is great and the whole system was installed and running within two days.”

Award Bundall Printing produces brochures, booklets, business cards, stationery, flyers and the like from its Arundel facility. It services major corporate clients, such as Telstra, with nationwide distribution, as well as local customers.

G2 had been supplying the consumables for the company’s previous platesetter and so became the go-to consultants for the upgrade. Spink says: “I know the guys really well. They are excellent to deal with.”
