RMIT students show their skills on Océ equipment

Océ assisted the students produce their catalogue and portfolios in preparation for the graduation exhibition on Océ production colour systems at the Océ showroom using specialist Océ media.

Meredith Chesney, graphics training educator at RMIT said it was crucial to the students that the highest standards of digital printing were used to print their design portfolios.

She says, “This opportunity, provided by Océ, enabled the students to create and design the final art and then make sure it was printed the way they wanted it on correct media, completing the cycle.

“The students found it a terrific experience and, equally importantly, they were encouraged to work together in developing the work, which reinforced the teamwork ethic they will find in the workplace.”

Observers at the ceremony were impressed by the creativity and flair shown in this year’s portfolios.

Earlier, industry representatives were invited to view the portfolios and a number of job offers have already been received by some of the students. Chesney said that this was common each year as the standards in the course were highly regarded by the printing, advertising and graphic design sectors.

The portfolios have been posted on the web at www.conceptobject2010.com

Andrew Cocker of Océ, who helped coordinate the joint effort, says students were introduced to both black and white and colour equipment to familiarise them with the type of equipment they will be using in their future work.

He says, “These are the graphic arts professionals of the future so it’s important they obtain some hands-on experience with state-of-the-art digital printing systems and have the chance to ask questions about colour imaging and output.

“We also introduced them to the wide range of Océ papers and substrates, allowing them to choose the stocks best suited to their designs.”
