The state’s awards night was held on Saturday 27 August at the Burswood Entertainment Complex, supported by major sponsor Kodak.

Perth-based Scott Print is a perennial favourite at state and national level, most recently securing a pair of gold medals at this year’s National Print Awards. It continued its winning ways last weekend with a massive seven golds and 25 awards overall.

Managing director Dudley Scott said it was a good night, and was proud his company managed to “outperform the multinational”.

“It is an opportunity for the industry to meet up. It is not really about wining awards but for the industry to get together in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere,” said Scott.

Scott Print’s medal haul was closely followed by Geon’s WA arm, which came home with five gold awards plus the sponsors award, adding up to a total haul of 21.

The printer walked off with the Heidelberg Award for its work on the Rio Tinto calendar.

The Bassendean plant is another west coast overachiever at awards evenings, having won the trans-Tasman group’s only gold at the NPAs.

Paul Meloncelli, sales manager of Geon Bassendean, said: “It is nice to be rewarded for all the hard work over the year. We certainly don’t get sick of hearing our name read out at awards!”

Scott Thompson, Geon’s executive general manager, Australia, said: “Congratulations are due to the Perth team who worked on the medal-winning products. I thank you for your efforts and continue to be proud of the work that Geon continues to deliver.”

The other big winner was Quality Press, which, along with its QPrint Online digital arm, secured five golds, with 14 awards overall.

The Kodak ‘Printing Industry Recognition award’ went Mick Ciavarella from Presslink for his support of the industry, particularly with the LIA.

The PIAA’s Western Australia general manager, Paul Nieuwhof, said the PICAs were going from strength to strength.
