SMH trumps readership data after jobs slashed

According to the latest emma data for April, Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) is Australia’s best performing news media title, trouncing its competitors with 5.96 million readers across print and digital.

Rival publisher News Corp’s titles The Daily Telegraph and the Herald Sun followed behind, reaching 4.39 million and 4.4 million readers respectively.

Fairfax Australian publishing media managing director Allen Williams says, “Our digital audience of 11.3 million people was up 141,000 in April compared to the prior month and our total print audience remained strong – reaching 6.2 million people across our mastheads nationally in the month.

“The month-on-month audience growth underlines the strength and depth of our quality independent journalism and content, and the valuable, large-scale multi-platform audiences that we connect to our advertisers.”

In March, SMH and The Age editorial staff were targeted in a plan to slash 120 jobs as a result of sluggish print advertising revenue.

Following staff strikes and an investigation launched by the Media and Entertainment Arts Alliance (MEAA), Fairfax dropped the cuts to 82 full-time jobs.
