Southern Colour sticks to one-stop-shop philosophy with ex Geon perfect binder

Rod Dawson, managing director of the Keysborough-based commercial printer, said the Muller Martini Acoro A7 would arrive in July around the same time as the first of Southern Colour's new Heidelberg XL presses.

The firm is removing its 2009 model 10-colour and six-colour XL 105 presses to make room for a 10-colour XL 106 perfector and six-colour XL106 with in-line coater, which is scheduled to arrive later in the year.

Dawon told ProPrint the Muller Martini investment "shows our commitment to our staff, our customers and the industry by investing in something that, while not brand new, is a significant investment".

He added that the Muller Martini Acoro "continued our push to lead by use of technology".

"We have been doing burst binding in-house for some time with an older machine and PUR is something a lot of clients have asked about.

"We see it as integral to our offering as an everything-under-one roof solution. It was a really good fit for the business."

He said the Acoro was in "very good condition" and offered greater automation and signature recognition as well as the ability to produce gatefold covers. It runs at a higher speed and has a shrink-wrapping tunnel, added Dawson.

He said the perfect binding line would be purely used for Southern Colour's client base and there were no plans to move into trade work.

According to auctioneers Dominion Group, the 2007 Muller Martini Acoro A7 21-station perfect binder fetched $385,000.
