The Speedmaster XL 105-P handles sheets between 420x480mm and 730×1,050mm at a maximum speed of 15,000 sheets per hour in perfecting mode. It can produce 8, 10 or 12 colours on one side or switch automatically to perfecting for full colour on both sides of the sheet.

Features include automatic format, ink duct and air transfer pre-setting. It also uses Heidelberg’s PerfectJackets manufactured and mounted in pairs on the double-size impression cylinders. Job changes are processed by the firm’s Intellistart press control software, part of the next-generation press console at the Prinect Press Center.

The machine is aimed at high-volume commercial printers with the firm claiming it has the potential to produce up to 60 million sheets per year even when only fitted with basic specifications. Heidelberg also said the press can increase productivity in perfecting mode by up to 40 per cent compared with other models on the market.

The UK’s first Speedmaster XL 105-P, which was launched at this year’s Drupa, has been installed at Cardiff (Wales)-based The Westdale Press, as part of the firm’s $AU16.5m investment programme.

The Westdale Press managing director, Alan Padbury said: “The machine runs at full speed 90 per cent of the time and there is no paper or format it has had difficulty in handling. Makeready is extremely fast and our overall output has risen by more than a quarter at least.”

Westdale’s 12-colour XL 105-P is equipped with Image Control and a CutStar reel to sheeter.
