Tassie backs Keep Me Posted

The local councils of Tasmania have voted in favour of supporting the consumer campaign Keep Me Posted, with executive director Kellie Northwood confirming the motion of support was carried.

No numbers or details have been released as of yet, however the Mayor of Devonport Steve Martin has declared victory for Keep Me Posted.

With the motion carried, this will see the Local Government Association of Tasmania endorse the activities of Keep Me Posted, which is raising awareness of large corporates charging people who opt to receive paper versions of information or bills.

Northwood says Tasmania has become the country’s leader in promoting the consumer’s right to choose.

“It is great news for Tasmanians that all the local councils of Tasmania at once stand for consumer rights,” she says.

“Local support is critical to the campaign as local councils are close to their communities and provide assistance for the most vulnerable.

“Also, as service providers, many councils in Australia are engaged in transitioning to digital communications, it is important that they protect their resident’s right to choose paper communications without penalty.”

The next stage of the campaign will see Keep Me Posted rally support in Queensland and Victoria by engaging with local government representatives.

The campaign will also be organising public forums in the next few months, with the next one to be hosted by Member for Moreton, Graham Perret in Brisbane on November 15.
