Williams had worked in the print industry
virtually his whole life, and was known to thousands of people in the industry
through his sales roles with various suppliers, and his deep involvement with
the LIA.
He worked at the old FT Wimble machinery
and plates supplies company, then moved to Edwards Dunlop when it had a
machinery division. He then joined Maruka Machinery selling Akiyama and Ryobi
presses, before switching sides and joining pre-press house Quality
Lithographic, selling colour separations and plates to printers. He then
started his own business, ProLith International, selling chemicals and inks,
before joining the newly formed Cyber Australia in his final role, where
he was once again selling Ryobi and Akiyama presses, as NSW state manager.
His involvement with the LIA lasted for
three decades. He was NSW state president from 1988-90, and he was awarded a
Fellowship of the LIA in 1995. However his favourite role, and that in which he
was best known, was that of chairman of the social committee, where he was
responsible for organising dinners, seminars, and the biannual national
conference when it was held in NSW.
John Fisher, from John Fisher Print, who is
delivering the eulogy at the funeral, and who served with George on the LIA for
many years says, "George will be remembered for his tremendous good nature. He
was dedicated to the industry, where he made thousands of friends. He was a
truly great character."
The funeral will be held tomorrow (Weds
April 30) at St James Anglican Church, Bathurst Street, Pitt Town, NSW,
at 11am. Donations in lieu
of flowers should be made to the Cancer Council.
