Melbourne label printer Burgess Printing and Packaging has been acquired by Danish packaging group Schur International, after 44 years in the Burgess family.

Burgess has now been taken under Schur’s wing for an undisclosed sum.

Schur International has been in business for 170 years, and is also private and family owned. It operates an international team of 15 subsidiaries with 900 employees across its locations in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, the US and now Australia. 

It is understood all Burgess staff have remained with the business after being placed into Schur’s ownership.

Fifth-generation owner of Burgess Printing and Packaging Jan Evans says the team in Melbourne welcome the acquisition and are ready to join forces with a similar family-orientated business.

“Schur, like Burgess, is based on long-standing family values and a focus on supporting the demands from their customers,” says Evans.

Schur International owner Hans Schur also commented on the deal, stating Burgess’ takeover will boost its efforts to enter the Australian market.

“As part of our strategy to develop the Schur Star concept worldwide, we are pleased to have acquired Burgess Printing and Packaging. We look forward to continuing the close working relationship with the existing customers and to developing the Burgess business and market further,” says Schur.

Schur specialises in manufacturing pre-made flexible bags custom made for filling on a linked production line. Burgess produces labels and flexible packaging for the pharmaceutical, health, food, beverage, chemical and industrial market sectors.
