Visy, Hannan and Salmat among Australia’s wealthiest in 2010 Rich List

Westfield founder Frank Lowy pushed packaging giant Visy’s Anthony Pratt from the number one spot. But Pratt, now “languishing” at number three, still managed to increase his wealth by $300m, up from $4.3bn in 2009 to $4.6bn in 2010.

The Hannan dynasty’s $630m made them the highest listing for a print company. The wealth of the owners of the Independent Print Media Group may have fallen $65m since last year, but they still came in as 16th richest family in Australia.

Retirement has obviously been good to Salmat founders Peter Mattick and Philip Salter. The lifelong friends, who retired as joint managing directors of the direct mail powerhouse last year, pocketed an extra $45m, up from $376m in 2009 to $421m this year .They share the 93rd spot on the list.

Another magnate with print interests is the Seven Network head Kerry Stokes, whose wealth shot up $390m to $2.29bn. Stokes has control of West Australian Newspapers and Pacific Magazines through Seven.

Lindsay Fox, whose many interests include print management company Foxprint Solutions, described the past year as the “best in history” as his wealth went up $290m to $1.87bn.

Rural Press owners John B Fairfax and Timothy Fairfax lost $15m since last year’s listing but still posted a cool $603m for 2010.
