DMM merger creates $30m Melbourne mailing powerhouse

The combined Melbourne company, which began talks last October and announced the move in December, employs 87 staff and operates a arsenal of Fuji Xerox digital presses as well as the hybrid web press that is unique in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Direct On Line Imaging System (DOLIS) reelfed press is actually a pair of high-speed Xeikon monochrome units mounted on a TOF500 web press, in a configuration designed by DMM.

The merged business remains under the Direct Mail & Marketing (DMM) banner, and is led by founder Fred Humphrey, in an expanded site in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong South.

Humphrey said: “We were after growth through acquisition and we were looking at other customers, both in Australia and New Zealand, then we were approached by one of the directors of Datasend Australia, and we ultimately struck a deal.

“We were looking for growth – with customers that complemented our range of existing customers but were different. With Datasend’s customers, we now have more of a retail focus,” he added.

The DMM building, which includes a 4,000sqm production and storage area, underwent a $200,000-plus upgrade to make room for the expanded business.

The company operates two DocuColor 5000, a Color 1000 Press, and four Nuvera 144 monochrome printers, including a Nuvera 144 MX with MICR capability for cheque printing.

It also offers variable-data services as a user of Fuji Xerox’s XMPie suite.
