56-year-old printery closes

Queensland veteran printer and supplies wholesaler Cross Printery has closed its doors and appointed liquidators after a 56-year long stint in the printing industry.

Cross Printery, which was established in 1960, has shut down operations and collapsed into liquidation late last week. A creditors meeting for the business has been scheduled for August 29 held by Vincents Chartered Accountants.

ProPrint spoke to liquidator Nick Combis, who says Cross Printery had attempted to expand into other areas outside of North Queensland, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

“The business had been on its way out for some time, parts of it had been sold but the owner could not rescue all of it so it was effectively shut and liquidators were appointed,” says Combis.

The printer was locally owned and operated by the Blucher family.

Also known as Cross Office Choice, the business was part of a global parent company Business Products Group International (BPGI).

According to a notice on its company website, Cross Printery has been in contact with its creditors and suppliers since it ceased trading – which includes HP, Canon, Epson, OKI and Xerox.

As well as offering printing services to the local Mackay community the business supplied toners, ribbons and cartridges, sold inkjet printers and multifunction machines from Brother, Canon and HP.
