ASGA confronts skills shortage at career expos

The Australian Sign and Graphics Association (ASGA) will be pulling together a list of potential apprentices/trainees seeking a career in the sign industry following its attendance of the upcoming Apprenticeship/Traineeship and Jobs expos.

John Watters and Tina Mavris from the ASGA Board will attend these Apprenticeship/Traineeship and Jobs expos, which are being held across NSW in August and September as well as the Perth SkillsWest Careers & Employment Expo from 25 to 27 August.

“Career expos offer the opportunity for students, job seekers and career changers of all ages to connect with organisations for guidance, clarity and opportunities in relation to career options,” ASGA education committee chair Damian Nielsen said.

“At the South Australian, Victorian and Queensland career expos this year we gathered over 150 names of people who are interested in learning more about the sign industry and we look forward to doubling that with our efforts in NSW and WA.

“We recognise that a shortage of skilled and available staff is a problem across many sign businesses at the moment. This initiative is aimed at addressing this issue.”

Nielsen added that the ASGA has short courses planned for the people that have registered their interest at the expos that are aimed at giving them a taste of what a career in signage might look like.

It will be working with several stakeholders to make it happen – training providers, sign industry suppliers and other key industry organisations, such as Visual Connections.

“It’s a big commitment from everyone involved but necessary for addressing the skills shortage issue,” Nielsen added.

ASGA members that are seeking an apprentice can register their interest here.
