Aus Paper scores sustainable accolade

Australian Paper has been chosen as a finalist at this year’s Premier’s Sustainability Awards for its Vic recycling facility, joining 30 other businesses in the chance to receive the top accolade.

The paper manufacturer opened its Maryvale recycling plant in April last year, equipped with the capacity to divert up to 80,000 tonnes of local wastepaper from landfills annually.

According to Australian Paper, in the nine months it was open last year the group delivered savings of 33,372 tonnes of CO2 emissions, 88 per cent of which derived from Victoria-sourced wastepaper recycling.

Chief executive for Sustainability Victoria Stan Krpan congratulated Australian Paper for its work in sustainable practice and reduction in climate change impact.

“Delivering these awards each year means we continue to discover the talent and enthusiasm Victorians have for protecting their environment and thinking creatively about new sustainable business models,” says Krpan.

“These awards represent Victoria’s highest recognition for sustainability, and acknowledge leadership, innovation and achievement. Each finalist should be congratulated for improving sustainable outcomes across business, government and within the community.”

The two major winners are slated for announcement on October 20 at Melbourne’s Plaza Ballroom, personally selected by Victorian Premier, The Hon Daniel Andrews.

Alongside Australian Paper in the large business category is Crown Melbourne and Toyota Motor Corporation Australia.
