The Mt Wellington packaging company, which dived into the specialist print finishing market earlier this year with its previous acquisition, a Converta die cutter, is now able to offer specialist over-size and under-size die cutting and guillotining to printers.
Its newest machine, bought through Flint Ink, “can cut just about anything – even carpet,” say Earl Karsten.
“The boys have been trying everything out on it that they can find lying around the factory.”
It takes substrates up to 1.68 m wide and 2.4 m long, and has a minimum cut of 26mm “which is where we really score, because few people can cut material this width,” he says.
Only just assembled in the company’s premises, the guillotine already has worked lined up for it, including narrow packaging tape which is cut in strips before being put onto rolls.
He says the fully automated machine is ideal for jobs in the large format finishing and packaging industries, as well as for the very small jobs. It can cut material up to 160mm thick (depending on hardness) at one time, and is accurate to within .001mm. Its computer programme also shows the operator how to position the material to be cut to get the highest yield from it.
The machine has a full air table for ease of movement of any material and can be operated by one person.
It comes with some specialist knives for cutting PVC and the machine’s safety specifications are higher than necessary for New Zealand OSH compliance. The German-manufactured machine took a week to assemble.
Earl says they took a look at all the major available brands before settling on the Perfecta.
“We wanted something which didn’t have to be purpose built just for us, and that was available and ready to ship. We needed something for our own in-house work which would aid production efficiency and accuracy.”
He says they approached Flint Ink, and they’ve been very pleased with the service. “Flint Ink has been extremely helpful. They organised all the training we needed and will provide any backup service also.”
