Blaze erupts at Melbourne tape factory

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s media unit has told local media that emergency services were called at 6.30am after a number of passers-by saw flames erupting from the 2000sqm factory.

The fire was brought under control around an hour later and was completely extinguished at 9am. Initial reports say the blaze has left a damage bill of more than $200,000, however Mark Ekelmans, managing director of Boomerang Tapes was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

A warehouse manager at Boomerang Tapes told radio station 3AW there was a lot of stock in the factory as the company is in the lead up to the busy Christmas period. He adds the company had been operating at the site for more than 40 years.

Three Country Fire Authority trucks and 25 MFB trucks were at the scene this morning, no injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Boomerang Tapes sells industrial tape throughout Australia’s labelling and packaging industry.
