Brisbane printer revels in experience of racing Usain Bolt

McCabe ran the third leg for Australia's 4x100m team to help his country to a seventh-placed finish in a time of 38.43 seconds.

Bolt crossed the line in first to give Jamaica the gold medal in a world record time of 36.84 seconds.

McCabe told ProPrint that "words can't describe how it's like to be in an Olympic final".

"On the one hand there are 80,000 people screaming at you, but on the other you have a job to do," he said.

"Racing the world's fastest men is always a bonus. Usain is a unique character full of surprises and showmanship. He has really turned the sport around. Then having them break the world record – this is something I will tell my kids one day."

McCabe used to work for Worldwide Online Printing, before resigning in the lead-up to London so he could focus on his training.

He said he would not be returning to the Spring Hill franchise in the immediate future, but that "a return later in the year is not out of the realms of possibility".

"Worldwide Online Printing Spring Hill were amazing in their support of my running. I was allowed to have a flexible work schedule and still train full-time. Any other job I would have lost it within a few weeks," he said.

McCabe said his other Olympic highlights were watching Bolt win the 100m and 200m and helping the relay team equal the Australian record (38.17 seconds) in the semi-final.
