Brisbane printers begin assessing the damage

ABC Printing in the suburb of Milton could not be reached this morning, but is believed to have suffered “major inundation to the ceiling”, according to Printing Industries state manager Neal McLary.

This is backed up by a report in the Westside News which quoted ABC owner Dave Walden saying that the company’s damage bill would run into the millions.

McLary added that Kwik Kopy West End had also confirmed “some damage”, though franchise owner Adrian Davis could not be contacted directly by ProPrint.

Printers in affected suburbs such as Rocklea, Graceville and Milton could also not be reached by ProPrint.

The industrial suburb of Geebung, known locally as ‘printer alley’, was unaffected by the flood.

“The predominantly outer Brisbane industrial location for most businesses appears to have saved most from any major damage, but there are a number of members that have experienced inundation who we will work closely with to assist them to get their businesses back operating,” McLary said.

“There are also a small number of companies that we have not been able to make contact with, which is causing us much concern.”

The offices of Printing Industries in the suburb of Newmarket were also spared from inundation, despite fears earlier this week that waters up to 1.5m-high would breach the site. The office has re-opened today.

McLary said he has been “amazed at how lucky most businesses had been”.

Spot Productions in the riverside suburb of Pinkenba had sent staff home as the flood situation developed. The company has adopted a half-day schedule over the past two days, though it was not breached by floodwaters.

Spot managing director Simon Carmody said the challenge for many printers was finding work, as most government and advertising agencies in the CBD had been inoperative for most of the week

“This is going to hurt the industry for some time,” he said.
