Cactus Imaging catches Oprah fever with Opera House wrap

Cactus produced the 23mx14m job for outdoor advertising company Scaffad Australia, which has been handling the Oprah campaign.

Cactus general manager Nigel Spicer told ProPrint that the printer was given a strict brief by Scaffad.

“It required particular reinforcement and very particular edging measurements,” Spicer said.

“It was a unique requirement for the material. It had to be light enough to go on a roof and strong enough to protect [Oprah] from the elements. So that was a bit of a challenge.”

The wrap was printed on a reinforced blockout material on Cactus’ Nur Expedio 5000 and required double-stitching on the edges for increased weather resistance.

Spicer said the wrap was produced under “pressure cooker” conditions with Oprah’s team wanting to inspect the production of the wrap once they’d reached Australia.

In the end, the wrap was produced inside a 24-hour time frame and finished on Tuesday (7 December).

The banner will be wrapped around the roof of Oprah’s outdoor stage at the Opera House, making it visible to the production’s helicopter cameras. Scaffad has also designed and sourced stage wraps and televisions screens to be featured on the broadcast.

Meanwhile, Cactus has also completed a series of outdoor ads for Vodafone that have been installed at Sydney Airport which Spicer said the printer is “particularly happy with”.

Cactus was retained by Host to produce the ads which depict Australian wildlife such as crocodiles and spiders, saying they were asked to create an “aquarium-like enclosure” look.

“It speaks volumes of the quality of the artwork and the print that we were able to produce that,” Spicer said.

Spicer said that the ads were produced under similar time pressures, as Vodafone needs exceptional speed-to-market due to their regular price changes.

Cactus Imaging is a part of the Opus Print Group.
