Epson into digital labels

The six-colour press is aimed to challenge the dominance of HP Indigo and Xeikon in the digital labels world, and comes says Epson at a significantly different price point, in fact less than half that of the more established machines.

The SurePress uses Epson print heads and Epson inks, and will print on virtually any existing label stock, including both coated and uncoated papers, and films. Craig Heckenberg at Epson Australia says, “Because Epson is the world’s leading inkjet head developer it has been able to ensure that label printers using SurePress will be able to print on virtually any off-the-shelf labelstock.”

Also new from Epson was its inkjet CTP system. Based on an  Epson 7900 wide format inkjet printer, the system prints onto specially coated aluminium plates, which are then cooked through a dryer.

There is no chemical processing involved. Aimed at the A3 two and four colour offset market the system is so new Epson has no pricing yet. Heckenberg pointed out that when not making plates the same 7900 can also be used for poster printing and POS work, and for proofing ‘ a true multi-function device’ he says.
