Lord of the Rings artist to speak at NZ sign event

International calligrapher, cartographer, artist and font creator Daniel Reeve has been confirmed for event, being held at Petone, Wellington on 15-17 October.

Reeve will make a presentation on his work in various movies, which have also comprised fonts, documents and maps for King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Van Helsing. He will also be on hand during the event to provide calligraphy demonstrations and tuition.

Reeve told ProPrint that whether working on a print job or pop culture project, he strives to utilise whatever mediums and methods are most expeditious for achieving the “right look”.

“While at times this may mean using modern graphics software, it also often means using a bottle of ink and the humble quill,” he said.

Reeve, who is an active member of the Calligraphers of Kapiti, was recently involved in creating replicas of The Treaty of Waitangi for a national-touring exhibition.

The New Zealand Sign & Display Association bills Letterheads as the “annual opportunity to learn from people prepared to share their skills and expertise” and is considered an ideal environment for furthering the education of apprentices and trainees.

This year’s event is being organised by an award-winning apprentice, Nicole Swain.
