Megacolour invests $2m in Speedmaster CD 102

Michael Fang, managing director Megacolour, says, “Our Speedmaster 74 was working around the clock and we were pushing it to its limit.  Our first priority was to improve productivity because the market today is all about quick turnaround. We knew that a faster, more automated press would allow us to take advantage of the on demand market also.”

The investment in the CD102-6 press forms part of a strategic business plan, designed to bring all services in house; prior to the installation of the CD102-6 press Megacolour outsourced its A1 work. Gavin Smith, sales and marketing director, Megacolour says, “The growth we’ve been experiencing meant we needed to move up to a higher capacity and larger format.

“Our business is evolving. We’re doing a lot of point-of-sale work now that goes across small offset and large offset. We wanted to keep all the work in-house to be in control of quality and turnaround times so we have kept the A3 machine and positioned the CD102-6 as the heartbeat of our operation.”

Savas Mystakidis, sales and branch manager for the Northern Region Heidelberg Australia, told Australian Printer, “I have been involved with Megacolour for 18 years now and I have seen them grow from a small print business to one of the larger ones. Megacolour has a building process and they first looked at investing in a Speedmaster CD 102-6 about five years ago. The company has grown step by step. The machine will be used to do all sorts of work, from packaging to commercial work such as posters, point of sale.”

Smith adds that the new press has opened doors for Megacolour enabling the company to take on a much greater range of packaging jobs something that the business wasn’t able to previously produce. He says, “The press has proven itself with speed, quality and versatility. The fact that we can print on a huge range of substrates, including heavy packaging boards has resulted in us gaining more work from existing clients and also attracting new business. Packaging is a growth segment and we are now ideally positioned to benefit from this trend.
