Melbourne flexo supplier grows with Esko

Since starting out in 2000, Melbourne-based prepress supplier to the flexographic printing industry, David Simpson Graphics (DSG) has continued to use the latest Esko solutions.

Steve Barron, general manager at DSG says the company maintains strong relationships with its clients and suppliers.

“Our relationship with Esko goes back to 2000, when we started. We have had an Esko workflow from the start. We started with an Esko image setter and the Spark CDI is our latest purchase,” Barron says.

“This has helped us dramatically. It has opened up new business for us. This helps us service the wide web and label customers especially high-end label printers.”

Today DSG supplies businesses nationwide with a variety of prepress solutions, including HD Flexo plates for wide web and label, specialised plate mounters for corrugated plate mounting, Epson digital proofing systems and conventional flexo plates for corrugated printing.

It uses the Esko CDI 4260 for high definition flexo platemaking. Barron adds, “We have an Esko workflow, the latest version. We are on a service contract so we keep up to date with all the latest versions of the software packages. In relation to the Spark CDI, we see that as the industry standard. It allows us to make high definition plates on any material and in-house. We are not locked into one brand of plate.”

Barron says the company has strived to maintain a reputation for quality and reliability in the industry, and is expecting to incorporate Esko equipment in its future plans for growth.

“We feel we have a good position in the industry. It is important to us that we are a fully family-owned Australian owned and operated business,” he says.

“The Esko equipment is a big part of our plans for the business to grow. We look forward to offering the printers nationally with high definition printing plates and quality prepress.”

DSG has battled the wave of digital disruption over the past eight years by striving to maintain the highest standards, which the company sees as a way to create a point of difference with competitors.

Barron says, “The prepress side of the industry has consolidated over the past few years. For us, we base our ongoing success on our service quality and the Esko equipment remains a strong component in that.

“Of course, our greatest asset is our professional staff. Any successful business needs highly professional, highly trained, and highly knowledgeable staff members.

He concludes, “We are a part of the Flexographic Association which has combined with LATMA. This membership helps to keep us up to date with what we need to know, especially with workshops and forums.”
