New Zealand Proprint no more

However, it is a case of gone but not forgotten for the magazine’s Australian-based publisher Don Elliot.

Although New Zealand Proprint is no more, Elliot has plans to utilise his Australian resources to produce a single magazine that covers both Australia and New Zealand.

New Zealand-based associate editor Ann Callahan could not be reached for comment, but will no longer be involved with the magazine in New Zealand.

“We don’t really want to put our resources over there [New Zealand] for a smaller market,” Elliot says, “although it’s still an important market.”

Elliot cites several factors, including the small size of the New Zealand advertising market and intense competition in the Australian market as strains on company resources, forcing the rethink.

While he is tight-lipped on just how much New Zealand content will be carried in the new version of Australian Proprint, Elliot says there “won’t be a lot” in the next issue.

The format of the new-look Australian Proprint, and its title, are also unknown. However, for the first month at least, it will look “something like” Australian Proprint with some New Zealand content, Elliot says.

“We’re still working on it,” he says. “It will be there, but it will be in a different format.”

The first issue of New Zealand Proprint was published in July 2002. The last was in October 2003.

The closure came as a surprise to many in the industry who were waiting for the December 2003 issue of the magazine.
